By Starr Durrant

In under 30 minutes and for under $5.00 I was able to put together a great little one of a kind patio set that Barbie can use to enjoy those lazy summer days!

I like to be creative in terms of re-purposing and as a huge fan of the dollar stores and Barbies, I’m always on the look out for ways to convert something intended for one use into something completely new. Hopefully this inspires you to look at things in a different way and find your own dollar store treasures that you can re-purpose with or for your Barbie enthusiast. You will be surprised how much kids enjoy playing with toys they’ve made themselves: they learn how to embrace imperfection, how to recycle, how to be resourceful and how to occupy their time with creative endeavors that gives them a sense of accomplishment and achievement, so dig through the junk drawer or take a trip to the dollar store together and see what you can turn into Barbie magic!

When I found these cute little candle holder chairs, all I needed to do was remove the candle and cover the seat with some colorful duct tape. It just doesn’t get any easier! They came in a variety of colors and only cost $1.25 each and I wish I had bought more because these would make great gifts!

One issue I had was the size of the candle holder hole – it was too large to cover with one strip of tape so I chose to go with two strips; one going either direction. You can also add a strip of tape to the upper panel of each chair as well.

The patio table is an individual cupcake holder also from the dollar store. It comes with a little spatula to lift up the cupcake so when I removed that – there is a gap on the top of it. To address that, I glued on a circular polka dot tag from a gift bag and it even has a  pattern similar to the tape on the chairs.

Because I’m making this project to go along with a refurbished doll house for friends of mine I dug out an old piece of that plastic grass, a white lace rack and plastic flowers all from the Edmonton Re-use Centre and painted it pink before gluing the flowers on. If you wanted to make a trellis and didn’t have this type of thing available you can build one using plastic straws, kabob sticks or pop-cycle sticks and plastic or silk flowers; all these supplies are available at your local dollar store.  I went with a hot pink trellis because the outside of the doll house will be white and I want it to stand out; that and experience has taught me that little girls who love Barbie’s can’t get enough hot pink and purple so when I’m making gifts, I try to incorporate those colors where I can. In place of grass you could use green construction paper or fabric.

Your little one probably has all sorts of accessories she can add like a little ball, sunglasses or a little pet figurine and if not, these types of things are always available at the dollar stores. For drinking glasses you can cut off a half inch colored straw or in some case little pen parts work perfect.

How To Make A Baby Blanket With Adorable Appliques

Who doesn’t appreciate receiving a hand made gift for their little one? With these easy to follow steps you can make a unique and beautiful baby blanket like this one by Lulu Spencer and it’s sure to be a hit with mom and baby alike.

This project requires a sewing machine, photocopier, print & solid fabric, embroidery thread and basic sewing skills. The blanket in the pictures was designed to be for the car seat but can be adapted to any size.

Step 1
Choose a piece of prewashed fabric with a simple motif that will be easy to cut and recognizable with just the outline and a second solid piece the same size to attach the motif to.

Polar Bear Flannelette

Step 2
Photocopy a piece of the fabric, enlarging it. In this project the polar bear was enlarged by 70%. Cut the motif out for a pattern piece to use and then pin and cut it out of felt or wool (consider re-purposing an old sweater) that has been preshrunk. Use embroidery thread to hand stitch the motif to the plain flannelette using a running stitch or blanket stitch.

Step 3
Sew the front panel to back panel (half inch seam allowance), matching right sides together and leave an opening (10 – 12 inches). Trim the corners and surge or zigzag raw edges so that there aren’t any bulky seams. Turn it right side out and press the seams open for a crisper edge using a steam setting on your iron. Press the seams flat before tucking in the opening and sewing it closed. Finally, top stitch 1/4 inch all the way around (10 stitches per inch setting)

DIY Bassinet For Barbie (Beginners Barbie Crafts Series – Project 2)

DIY Barbie Bassinet or Baby Shower Decoration

DIY Barbie Bassinet or Baby Shower Decoration

I’ve had a number of requests to share some Barbie DIY projects that are easy enough for kids or moms and grandmas to make with their little Barbie enthusiast even if they have no experience crafting. This is Project 2 in the beginners Barbie Craft series. You can find a link to Project 1 at bottom of page.

As with a majority of my projects, I set myself a task to create something with repurposed elements available to me. This quick little project was inspired by a trip to the Edmonton Reuse Center where at the bottom of a bin I found a package of baskets, the perfect size for a Barbie bassinet. Having immediately set my mind to a purpose for this new found treasure, I dug through the ribbon and lace and found the ideal accents. I was thrilled to find about 10″ of thin pink ribbon that says “It’s a Girl” and a half used package of pink roses.

My initial thinking was for a Barbie doll accessory but I also think these little baskets would work great for place settings at a baby shower, maybe as napkin holders or for mints?

The How To  is pretty self-explanatory and requires nothing more than a little basket which can be purchased at any craft store or dollar store, some glue and a few piece of lace, a touch of tulle, and any additional ribbon or embellishments.

If you are a youngster and don’t have access to ribbon or lace, consider using tissue paper, colored Kleenex, or wrapping paper ribbon. Sometime if you look through your dolls old clothes or your own, you can repurpose parts of them as well – but ask your mom first!

HOW TO MAKE WORKOUT ACCESSORIES

#1 YOGA MAT
The yoga mat is made from a piece of pink foam (available at most dollar or craft stores). It’s embellished with patterned pink & black DUCK Tape also available at dollar or craft stores.

#2 EXERCISE STEP
This is a pink eraser covered in pink and black zebra DUCK tape. There is a piece of pink foam on the bottom so it can be reversed for preference.

#3 SKIPPING ROPE
A black string with the pink plugs from the end of two pens glued on as handles.

#4 RESISTANCES BAND
A black string with two pink mini elastics used for braces tied to the end. I got these in a package of various colors  at a garage sale but they are also available at the pharmacy or dollar store.

#5 THIGH BUSTER
This was made from the bendy accordion like section of a flexible straw with black tape on the ends.

#6 HOOLA-HOOP
Plastic bracelet rescued from recycle center makes a perfect hoola-hoop. These are available in various colors at most dollar stores.

#7 MEDICINE BALL & WATER BOTTLE
The pink medicine ball and the water bottle come from my bin of recycle possibilities – the little things I collect to reuse from garage sales, second-hand stores or the recycle center.
